The area that is now Sea Gate was once known as Norton's Point.

The head was then placed at the mouth of the river, also known as Teach's Point, on a stake as a warning to other pirates.

In colonial times the area was also known as Clarke's Point.

The head remained for many years and the site continues to be known as Blackbeard's Point today.

For a couple of centuries, the area was known as Elizabeth's Point.

The place where Columbus had landed is now known as Fisherman's Point.

The post became known as "Peter's Point", and eventually grew into modern Petersburg.

This area grew and became known as Walker's Point.

Originally known as Turner's Point, a post office and school were established in 1858.

Its southern tip has been known locally as Dragon's Point since 1971 when a green dragon was built there.
