Landfills may be filling up, but if not for the "not-in-my-backyard" syndrome there would be millions of acres available for new landfills.

The critics maintain that many boards ignore the benefits to the entire city of new developments and fall prey to parochial concerns, particularly the "not-in-my-backyard" syndrome.

The not-in-my-backyard syndrome has erased any future plans to connect the loose ends across Mercer, Somerset and Union counties.

"The not-in-my-backyard syndrome is prevalent in Princeton," he said.
