In the 1870s, Belilios was chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited.

The property was purchased by a subsidiary of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels in 1991 from a bank after the previous owner declared bankruptcy.

It is owned by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited.

Its holdings include a 35 percent stake in China Light and a similar stake in Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, which is headed by Lord Kadoorie's son, Michael.

He is also the Chairman of the family's second largest listed group, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, owners and operators of the world-renowned Peninsula Hotel Group.

After the death of its owner, the mansion was sold and turned into a hotel (The Shanghai Hotel) famous for its local music and "joget" dances.
