"What you really need is a reading room," the artist recalled telling university officials.

"She was sweet and charming," recalls the artist, who is a friend of mine.

Even a curator, leading a tour through the exhibition, seemed enthusiastic, the artist recalled.

Both the artist and the patron recalled that their first meeting did not go off flawlessly.

The artist later recalled that his father screamed at him when he painted in ways that Philip did not approve of.

"People would save their stories for the luncheon and try to startle or amuse," the 88-year-old artist recalled the other day.

"That show was visible 24 hours a day," the artist recalled.

"She was in a room, in a bed," the artist recalls.

"I was going through a cat phase," the artist now recalls.
