Seed Savers offers 3,000 tomato varieties to members, and this year, for the first time, it is selling two dozen heirloom varieties from the United States and Russia to nonmembers.

Aunt Ruby's German Green heirloom tomatoes are a cultivar originating with Ruby Arnold (d 1997), of Greeneville, Tennessee, but achieving great Seed Savers popularity.
She won her share of ribbons and began working with groups like the Seed Savers' Network, which strive to preserve heirloom varieties.
"We're not anti-hybrid," said Kent Whealy, the director of Seed Savers, conceding that some hybrids are vigorous and disease resistant.
Seed Savers grows 1,200 of these rarities each summer at its 180-acre Heritage Farm outside Decorah.
There are scores, mostly quite new, the most prominent of which is Seed Savers, a nonprofit exchange in Decorah, Iowa.
