Gavelkind was finally abolished by the Law of Property Act in 1925.

This was later updated by the Law of Property Act 1925 s136.

An important change was caused by an amendment to the Married Women's Property Act 1884.

Contracts made earlier are subject to the old rules about writing and part performance contained in s. 40 Law of Property Act 1925.
