Lawrence later adapted the story into a play, The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd.

As in many of Lawrence's works there is a real life connection to The Widowing of Mrs Holyroyd.

Among the other highlights of her career was her title role in D. H. Lawrence's "Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd."

And after reading "The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd" by D. H. Lawrence, he confided: "I wish I could write such dialogue - with mine I always hear the sound of the typewriter."

Bridget, born Hussey, formerly Moryson, the childless widow of Henry Manners, second Earl of Rutland, who died in 1563, survived him by very nearly four decades, all that time, even after her marriage with the Earl of Bedford (died 1583) and third widowing, drawing an income from the Manners estates.
