The genus of trees Halesia is named after him.

Carolina Silverbell, Halesia carolina, a favorite, slender, understory tree.

He pointed to the top of a hillock covered in flowering helleborus and halesia trees, cresting at a reading circle formed by rock outcroppings.

The fruit is a dry (non-fleshy) drupe with two wings down the sides; this distinguishes it from the other species of Halesia, which have four wings on the fruit.

Recent genetic evidence suggests it is probably more closely related to the genus Rehderodendron than to other species of Halesia; it may be transferred to that genus in the future.

Among the other trees are maples, acers, styrax, eucryphia, Pocket Handkerchief Tree davidia involucrata and a fine example of the Snowdrop Tree Halesia.

Specimens of interest include Carya buckleyi, Cedrus libani, Chionanthus retusus, Halesia diptera, Juglans x intermedia, Parrotia persica, Pinus bungeana, Pseudolarix amabilis, Quercus persica, Sorbus torminalis, Taxodium ascendens, and Torreya grandis.
