Linear Defects .

Fracture mechanics calculations have established that no linear defects detectable with 99.9% confidence at manufacture can grow to cause failure in a life of 30 years.

In both cases the dislocation line forms a linear defect through the crystal lattice, the crystal can be perfect on all sides of the line.

Dislocations are linear defects around which some of the atoms of the crystal lattice are misaligned.

Another quality indicator is the etch channel density; when the crystal is etched, tubular channels are created along linear defects.

Enamel spindles are also linear defects, similar to lamellae, but they too can be found only at the dentinoenamel junction, similar to enamel tufts.

The first stage is recovery, and it results in softening of the metal through removal of primarily linear defects called dislocations and the internal stresses they cause.

It comprises a structure in which a helical path is traced around the linear defect (dislocation line) by the atomic planes in the crystal lattice (Figure C).

Enamel spindles are "short, linear defects, found at the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ) and extend into the enamel, often being more prevalent at the cusp tips."

Enamel spindles are also linear defects, but they too can be found only at the DEJ, because they are formed by entrapment of odontoblast processes between ameloblasts prior to and during amelogenesis.
