The metal plate(s) within the beam are known as flitch plates.

Eliminating the need for bulky flitch plates reduces costs.

The chassis is built up from steel flitch plates over ash to give the necessary strength with flexibility.

A large crack was found and repaired with flitch plates and turnbuckles.

The frame was made from the wood ash with 3/32 inch steel flitch plates and tubular cross-members.

By 1907, Rover had discontinued the backbone frame and was using an ash chassis with steel flitch plates.

This new smaller car employed a conventional steel reinforced (with flitch plates) wooden chassis with half elliptic leaf springs front and rear supporting the car on rigid axles.

Where it is not possible to strengthen a sagging floor by the addition of secondary timbers relieving the overloaded joists, it may be feasible to strengthen any integral timber beams by inserting steel flitch plates into slots formed in these members (Fig 33).
