Current members include all of the state's five ethanol producers and the state's first large-scale biodiesel producer.

One ethanol producer has already sold shares to the public and two more are planning to do so.

But the political influence of the ethanol producers has proved untouchable.

The company also held greater sway within the organization because of its great weight as an ethanol producer.

At first, the ethanol producers had few allies.

Any ethanol producer that expands its production by at least 25% is eligible for tax credits with an increased maximum amount.

Qualifying ethanol producers may only receive a tax credit through June 30, 2009.

For instance, ethanol producers would be allowed to buy surplus Federal corn rather than the corn that's now selling at higher market prices.

And I appreciate the role the ethanol producers are playing to meet this challenge.

For the moment, American ethanol producers are watching warily but not protesting.
