It should not be confused with de Quervain's thyroiditis, another condition named for the same person.

De Quervain's thyroiditis: Subacute, non-bacterial inflammation of the thyroid gland, often after viral infection of respiratory tract.

Hypothyroidism can result from de Quervain's thyroiditis, which, in turn, is often caused by having bad case of flu that infects and destroys part, or all, of the thyroid.
