According to tradition, during a wake food was placed on a corpse to represent the deceased's unconfessed sins.

Needless to say, it would be construed that the victims, dying suddenly with unconfessed sins on their consciences, and in view of the unsanctified ground usually reserved for suicides, were on their way to hell.
