muscle contracture

A muscle contracture is a permanent shortening of a muscle or joint.

Occasionally, surgery is not needed during childhood, but becomes appropriate later in life, as head position changes (presumably due to progressive muscle contracture).

In severely affected muscles, there may be marked secondary changes, such as muscle contracture, particularly if management has been delayed or absent.

The primary symptom of paramyotonia congenita is muscle contracture which develops during exercise or activity.

It is an inherited, autosomal recessive disorder due to a defective ryanodine receptor leading to huge calcium influx, muscle contracture and increase in metabolism.

The earliest signs are early masseter muscle contracture following administration of succinylcholine, a rise in end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration (despite increased minute ventilation), unexplained tachycardia, and muscle rigidity.

It is used where there is "deficiency of liver and kidney, stagnation of wind-damp marked by muscle contracture and numbness of the limbs, aching in the loins and legs".

Hypertonicity, spasticity, clonus, limited range of motion, abnormal flexion neural pattern, and a plantarflexor (calf) muscle contracture may contribute to an individual only standing and/or walking on his or her toes.

Patients prescribed tramadol for general pain relief with or without other agents have reported withdrawal symptoms including uncontrollable nervous tremors, muscle contracture, and 'thrashing' in bed (similar to restless leg syndrome) if weaned off the medication too quickly.
