ipecac root

It is produced from the ipecac root.

Cephaeline is a desmethyl analog of emetine also found in ipecac root.

While use of emetine still caused nausea, it was more effective than the crude extract of ipecac root.

Early use of emetine was in the form of oral administration of the extract of ipecac root, or ipecacuanha.

Ipecac root itself is a poison, but in this diluted form, its ability to induce immediate vomiting means that the syrup is seldom fatal.

The commercial preparation of ipecac consists of 1/14 of an alcoholic extract of the roots and rhizomes of ipecac root.

This natural geographic connection was used (and to some extent still is today) by people coming from Nicaragua in search of new land or for exploiting forest products (e.g., hunting, rubber tapping, and extracting ipecac root).
