Gemmation and dimorphism.

In asexual reproduction (gemmation, fission, etc.), the detached portions of the organism develop into new individuals without the intervention of other living matter.

Within a coral head, the genetically identical polyps reproduce asexually, either via gemmation (budding) or by longitudinal or transversal division, both shown in the photo of Orbicella annularis.

This thesis, that all generation is division, continued throughout the B, C and D notebooks and was reinforced by an explicit equating, in September 1838, of division and gemmation or budding.
