Mr Sanborn was tutored in the secrets of code-writing by Ed Scheidt, then chairman of the CIA's Cryptographic Centre.

During the Second World War he put his knowledge of German at the service of the British monitoring and cryptographic centre, Bletchley Park, where he acquitted himself with distinction.
