His emphasis within entomology was on Coleoptera, his doctoral work (completed circa 1932) concerning a Japanese billbug (Okada, 1964).

Listed as toxic are carbaryl, used for billbug, sod webworm and chinch bugs; chlorpyrifos, used for ants, billbugs and weevils, and trichlorfon, used for grubs.

The testing will also evaluate these varieties for their response to drought and shade, their ability to retain color in cooler weather, and their resistance to pests such as billbug, armyworm and sod webworm.
