The High Court of Tynwald consists of two chambers.

After the castle had lost its other uses as a defensive structure, political residence, and meeting place for the High Court of Tynwald and the legislative assembly, its use as a prison continued, prisoners being transferred from the crypt at Peel Castle in 1780.

The Lieutenant Governor is removed as Presiding Officer of Tynwald and replaced by a member of Tynwald elected by the Members of the court (i.e., the High Court of Tynwald) as President of Tynwald.

The House of Keys meets about once each month with the Legislative Council in a joint session called Tynwald Court.

On 5 July each year Tynwald Court assembles in the open air on Tynwald Hill at St John's.

Despite their frequent bickerings in the Council and Tynwald Court, Loch and Drinkwater were friends in private life.

The President of Tynwald, elected by both branches, presides over Tynwald Court and over the Legislative Council.

The President authorises the Order Paper for sittings, is responsible for controlling the procedure of Tynwald Court and for the authoritative interpretation of its Standing Orders.

Formerly, the Lieutenant Governor presided over the Legislative Council and over Tynwald Court (a joint session of the Council and the House of Keys).

After Tynwald Day, Tynwald Court returns to Douglas for three further sittings, normally held on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday following Tynwald Day.

The nearby small hillock at Cronk Urleigh is traditionally thought to be the site of the original Tynwald courts until 1422, although the site may have been situated at nearby Rhencullen in Kirk Michael.

The two commonly accepted houses of Tynwald are the House of Keys and the Legislative Council, but according to some, the Tynwald Court (consisting of the members of both houses meeting together) counts as a third house.

On 20 February 2013, Paterson spoke & voted in Tynwald Court, the two branches of the parliament of the Isle of Man assembled, in favour of a proposal to impose fees & associated debt obligations onto students from the island wishing to continue into tertiary level education.

In a statement to Tynwald Court the Chairman of the Finance Board said that after meeting the auditors and the directors of the Bank, it was obvious that SIB had made very large loans to a relatively small group of companies, beyond banking guidelines, and these were probably irrecoverable.
