Community waters

Indeed, to follow the arguments through, the gear would have to be banned from all Community waters.

So far this has been forbidden in Community waters.

I do support this report, however, which in my opinion will both help to preserve fish stocks and to bring some calm to Community waters.

More often than not it is attributable to the fact that we have very complex fisheries in Community waters.

However, it does apply to the outermost regions, which are considered Community waters.

This research should also be extended to Community waters, taking into account information supplied by fishermen and producers.

We must require their suppression and ban all vessels that do not respect these rules from sailing in Community waters.

We are also looking into establishing permanent measures which would replace the driftnet ban to cover all Community waters.

Finally, I would like to challenge the Commission to try and put into practice a satellite system to control Community waters.

I need to underline however that calling for a complete ban on discards from Community waters is easier said than done.

I also feel it is necessary to clarify the processes for administering fishing authorisations outside Community waters.

My second point relates to the principle of relative stability and the full use of fishing rights obtained outside Community waters.

The Commission has always taken the view that the sustainability of fisheries needs to be ensured not only in Community waters, but also outside them.

The Agency will, however, be able to assist in any other region within Community waters which needs help and which requests it.

Community waters are regulated, but that does not mean that illegal practices do not take place within them.

Thirdly, a strict age limit on vessels to be given access to Community waters must be established in the near future.

The main problem with control mechanisms within European Community waters is driven by the fact that we have excess fishing capacity in our fleets.

The system of inspections carried out by Community countries on third country fleets operating in Community waters must be intensified.

Furthermore, they provide the Community fleet - whose capacity is greater than the stocks available in Community waters - with fishing opportunities.

The main evidence for this is that Community waters did not attract foreign fishermen, while British waters most certainly did.

Access into Community waters of vessels flying flags of convenience which do not meet Community safety standards must be controlled.

The European Union's real policy, however, is not in accordance with this view and nor is fishing in Community waters.

Clearly if these decisions had been taken earlier, if the Prestige had had an accident, it would not have occurred in Community waters.
