The "modified biophysical profile" consists of the nonstress test and amniotic fluid index only.

It is typically diagnosed when the amniotic fluid index (AFI) is greater than 24 cm.

Diagnosis is made by ultrasound measurement when there is an amniotic fluid index (AFI) of less than 5 to 6 cm.

Amniotic fluid index (AFI) is a rough estimate of the amount of amniotic fluid and is an index for the fetal well-being.
