To the west the forests of Kodagu hold sizeable populations of the endangered Nilgiri langur.

Of these, the Nilgiri langur was randomly distributed, whereas the lion-tailed macaque troops were confined to the southern sector of the Park.

Genetic evidence suggests that the Nilgiri langur and purple-faced langur, which usually are placed in the genus Trachypithecus, actually belong in Semnopithecus.

All four species (common Langur, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque and lion tailed Macaque) can be seen.

Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, the common langur, and the Bonnet Macaque.

There are 39 species of mammals, including Tiger, Leopard, Sloth bear, Elephant, Sambar, Barking deer, Bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur an Nilgiri tahr.

The Nilgiri langur (Trachypithecus johnii) is a lutung (a type of Old World monkey) found in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats in South India.

The common mammals found are Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Elephant, Sambar (deer), Bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri Tahr etc.

Several troops of monkey species reside in the park, too: bonnet macaque, the endangered lion-tailed macaque, the common langur and the Nilgiri langur, whose deeply booming voice echoes hauntingly across the misted lake at dawn and dusk.

Threatened mammals including Bison, Nilgiri Langur, Malabar Giant squirrels and Indian Elephants are seen here as well as Indian Crested Porcupines, Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Sambar Deer and Mouse Deer.

These protected areas are especially known for several threatened and endemic species including Nilgiri Thar, the Grizzled Giant Squirrel, the Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Elephant, the Gaur, the Nilgiri langur, the Sambar, and the Neelakurinji (that blossoms only once in twelve years).
