This great escarpment roughly follows a portion of the Eastern Continental Divide in this area.

Alderley Edge is a great sandstone escarpment that overlooks the Cheshire plain.

All around were great craggy escarpments, almost bare of trees, offering grandeur rather than beauty.

Beyond the bay rose Brazil's great coastal escarpment: more towering solid granite, only superficially weathered.

The great escarpments of the east bank had fallen away, leaving only distant reaches of desert sky.

Many, though certainly not all, passive continental margins are characterized by major escarpments (sometimes called great escarpments)(Fig. 4.2).

Below great escarpments the topography is usually highly dissected, but inland on the plateau surface the relief is generally subdued.

It is possible that a similar flexural effect is associated with great escarpments along passive continental margins.

Such upwarps consist of broad swells running parallel to the coast and are in most cases flanked on their oceanward side by a great escarpment.

The range's great northern escarpment offers excellent opportunities for gliding, hang gliding and paragliding as winds are forced up and over the hills.
