Under current law, states must cover poor children through age 5.

Administration officials said the program allowed states to cover children under age 19.

As written, the legislation would cover children through age 7.

The program currently covers children 12 years of age and under.

Requires states to cover pregnant women and children under the age of 13 in poor families.

Starting in 1991, state Medicaid programs would have to cover poor children 8 years old and under.

In the state of Idaho, there is insurance to cover children.

But under the governors' plan, states would not have to cover adults or children over age 12, no matter how poor.

New Jersey covered children up to 350 percent of the poverty level.

"The money does not have to be used to cover uninsured children," she said.
